Effective January 1, 2007
All candidates wishing to take the GED Examination must pass the Official 2002-Series Practice Test with an overall score of 2250 and a minimum of 410 on each of the five tests in the battery. Proof of passing scores must be presented at the time of registration for the GED Exam.

Transcript and/or credential verification fees are required for every request. No exceptions (including inmates in FCIs).

Candidates must present all required documentation (e.g., a valid, government issued photo ID, proof of residency in the District of Columbia, the GED Exam application, proof of passing Practice Test scores and appropriate fee at least seven (7) days prior to the desired exam date.
Passing the GED Exam may require some preparation on your part. The State Education Agency funds adult education programs that offer free or low cost GED preparation classes.

Tips for Preparing for the GED Exam
• Make sure you know in advance the best way to get to the testing center on time on the day of the test.
• Get a good night's sleep before your test day.
• Plan to arrive at the testing site about 10 minutes early to allow for any last-minute changes or delays.
• Make sure you have the following essential items with you on test day:
–Application form or reminder postcard
–Current photo identification
During the GED Exam, you will NOT be able to keep the following items at your seat:
Purses, knapsacks, tote bags, pagers, cell phones, textbooks, notebooks, jackets, coats or hats and other nonessential items
Tips for Taking the GED Exam
• Follow the instructions given by the GED
Examiner.
• Read all directions and questions carefully
and completely to ensure that you understand
what you are expected to do to answer each
question.
• Pick the single best answer.
• Follow the test directions for filling in the
answer sheet. Mark only one answer space for each question. Multiple answers will be scored as incorrect.
• Answer every question. You will not be
penalized for wrong answers.

Effective for all candidates sitting for the GED after January 1, 2007:
All prospective candidates wishing to register for the GED Examination must present evidence of the following:
Must be eighteen* years of age and not enrolled in a traditional educational program for the previous six months;
Must provide proof of DC residence;
Must present at the time of registration a valid (unexpired), government-issued, photo ID;
Must present at the time of each examination, and part thereof, a valid, government-issued, photo ID; and,
Must provide documentation of having passed the 2002 Edition of the GED Official Practice Test with a cumulative score of minimally 2250 and no individual test score(s) of less than 410.
*Candidates may be sixteen or seventeen years of age and meet the above requirements and provide documentation from the principal, director, or superintendent of having withdrawn from a traditional educational program six months prior to sitting for the GED; provide a notarized letter from the parent, guardian, government agency or court granting permission for the candidate to sit for the GED.
Be sure to bring current government-issued photo identification that lists the applicant's name, social security number, and District of Columbia address.
