District Adult Learners Get GED Credential

Demand Piece of Economic Pie

More than 481 adult learners push for a second chance at education and economic opportunity as they receive their GED certificates this Saturday from the University of the District of Columbia GED Testing Center in cooperation with the DC State Education Agency Adult Education (SEA) and Family Literacy program. The commencement graduation ceremony will be held at the University of the District of Columbia auditorium at 10 a.m.

"More Washingtonians are earning their GED because they recognize that the door to economic self-sufficiency and the end to generational poverty lie in education," said GED Administrator and Chief Examiner for the District of Columbia Philip L. PremDas. Recent studies show that adults with a GED certificate increase their incomes by an estimated $2,500 annually.

Reverend Dr. Louis M. Anthony Senior Pastor of Washington's historic Metropolitan Wesley African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church will deliver the commencement address.

What: GED Cap and Gown Commencement

To receive a GED certificate, adult learners who have not completed high school must pass five of the required tests in reading, writing, math, science, and social studies. The SEA strives to impact positively the quality of life and economic and workforce outcomes for all District of Columbia residents by expanding access to high quality education. Forty percent of traditional high school graduates cannot pass the GED according to some studies.
